The Cardmaking Technique of Heat Emboss

Heat embossing, also known as stamp and heat embossing, is perhaps one of the most versatile paper art techniques.  The result, which is characterized by a raised, glossy plastic coating, definitely brings in additional dimension and texture to a variety of artworks, particularly greeting cards.  If you’re about to do some cardmaking, read on to learn about heat embossing.

First off, you’ll need to secure the materials needed for this technique like heat gun, stamp, embossing ink pad, and embossing powder.  Optional materials are tidy tray and anti-static bag or sheet.

To begin, wipe the paper surface where you want to place the design with anti-static bag or sheet.  Although this step is merely optional, doing so will lessen static on the paper thus preventing stray embossing powder.  After all, you would want your cardmaking products to come out neat and perfect, right?

Next, place embossing ink pad or pigment ink on your stamp, and stamp the design on the paper.  It is advisable that you use slow drying ink, such as pigment ink.  If you want a perfectly transparent embossed design, select a clear embossing ink.  However, know that the color of your embossing powder will be the primary and most noticeable color of your design.  Colored embossing ink will just enhance the design’s color.

Right after you had stamped on the design, sprinkle embossing powder over the design while the ink is still fresh and wet.  Be sure to cover the image or design thoroughly.  Pour out the excess embossing powder into a tidy tray and into a container.  Get precise, perfect and professional card making outcomes by dusting off stray embossing powder with a pointed brush.

With a heat gun, heat the image until the embossing powder melts into a shiny coat.  The gun should be at least six inches away from the paper to prevent your powder and paper to get burned.  Heat the image via a sweeping motion of the gun.  At best, hold the paper using tweezers, or tape it onto the table surface.

That’s it – you now have an embossed art.  It’s really that fast and simple.  For a more glamorous look, try other embossing powder in gold, red, and other hues.  Have fun with the cardmarking technique of heat embossing.  Get as many stamp images and patterns as you can and start heat embossing your way into professional, embossed designs.

Various Embossing Techniques for Different Effects

Embossing is becoming a popular trend to decorate things by creating different effects. The reason is because it saves a lot of time and the user can apply it again and again without any problem. It saves a lot of efforts along with manpower that is involved for making several copies.

There are various techniques for embossing which can be used to customize your personal cards, invitation cards or scrapbooks. It is the simplest way which can make the work creative and highly attractive. Below are the various techniques which are used for creating different embossing effects.

  • Basic Heat Embossing: This is done by inking the stamp and then pressing it gently onto the piece of paper or card or anywhere you want to mark the impression. Then, sprinkle the stamped image with embossing powder. Remove the excess embossing powder and then use the heat gun to melt the embossing powder to give a raised effect on the stamped image.

  • Double Embossing: This is also done in the same manner. Firstly, the chosen rubber stamp has to be inked and then stamped onto the paper to leave an impression. Then use any of the stationary like pens or colored pencils to color the image properly. Then, put the embossing powder over it. Use the heat gun to have a double embossed image. This can be used to make an address embossed machine which is used for imprinting addresses on the top of the cards.

  • Over Embossing: This is used to make a glossier image. The stamp and ink is chosen as per the desired image or impression. Then, use clear enamel embossing powder over the entire image. Heat the image underneath instead of from the top. Once the enamel embossing powder has completely melted, repeat the process again and again till you get a smooth and shiny surface.

  • Rainbow Embossing: Make sure that you take a clear ink pad for inking your stamp. The ink should be such that it can stay wet for a longer time as more embossing powder of different colors will be used. Make the impression over the page and then start applying with one color over part of the image and then shake it off to remove the excess of the powder. Apply the rest of the colors in the same way. After using all the colors, heat the image with the heat gun to have a rainbow effect.

  • Clear on clear embossing: These are generally used over darker colors of card or paper. For creating this effect, use clear ink to stamp the image and then emboss it with clear embossing powder. This is used for giving the image an elegant look and will catch the attention without making the font bold.

The important thing to be kept in mind is that while heating the image with the heat gun, the card or paper will bend a little bit. So, be patient and place the card under a heavy book to flatten the card before using it for different purposes.
